One of the first milk vending machines in northern England has been installed in West Cumbria.
The vending machine, based in Gosforth, holds 150 litres (264 pints) of pasteurised semi-skimmed milk.
It is hoped the machine will help the environment by getting people to reuse their milk bottles.
Richard Mawson, the dairy farmer behind the idea, said: “If it works, I can certainly see it coming to Whitehaven and Cockermouth.”
The machine is available on a three-month trial and is open 24 hours a day.
The milk is sourced from a dairy just two miles away from Gosforth.
For a small price, customers can fill their own containers or passers-by can buy a disposable cardboard cup for a smaller drink.
Mr Mawson said: “She’s maybe not as good looking as the old milk maid but she works 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
